2012. USA. Directed by Chris Butler, Sam Fell. The second technically innovative stop-motion feature from the Oregon-based Laika animation studio (after Coraline, 2006) is a 3-D comic-horror story set in a haunted town in present-day New England. Norman, a psychic boy with unappreciated powers that allow him to converse with the dead, defies clueless parents and bullying classmates who doubt his predictions of doom. He explores graveyards, awakens zombies, and battles ghostly storms in an effort to reverse a 300-year-old witches’ curse—and hands out lessons in tolerance and self-sufficiency along the way. The film shines thanks to singular character design, outstanding production values, distinctive visual effects, and groundbreaking advances in puppet engineering.
