Tender Is the Wolf
2006. Tunisia. Directed by Jilani Saadi. With Anissa Daoud, Med Graya, Atef Ben Hessin. After his father humiliates him—again—an angry Stoufa storms out of his house on a cold, wintry night. Stoufa and his crew, a band of unemployed, alienated young men, hassle a pretty young escort, but when their taunts turn to rape, Stoufa's attempt to protect the girl fails. Saadi’s gripping noir drama, the follow-up to his award- winning Khorma, eloquently captures the despair and explosive violence internalized among the urban working class of Tunis. A fiercely independent auteur, Saadi has forged a singular voice in contemporary Tunisian cinema. In Arabic; English subtitles. 85 min.
