2012. South Korea. Written and directed by Hong Sang-soo. With Isabelle Huppert, Yu Jun-sang, Kwon Hye-hyo, Moon So-ri. Hang, a favorite of film critics and international film festival programmers, has made one of his most charming and graceful comedies with In Another Country. The "other country" in question is South Korea, a nation whose behaviors, particularly between women and men, Hang understands well—and treats with smiling affection. Finding herself in this other country is Anne, a Frenchwoman (the irresistible Huppert) who travels to a somewhat empty seaside town. Why she comes here, who she really is, and who she meets is relayed three times in different story variations, all "scripted" by a young woman in dire financial straits. The interplay of parallel narratives is exquisitely handled, and In Another Country is a luminous bagatelle. Courtesy Kino Lorber. In Korean; English subtitles. 88 min.
