Hollow City
2004. Angola. Directed by Maria João Ganga. With João Roldan. A small group of war orphans are taken to Luanda by a nun. In the confusion at the airport, 12-year-old N’Dala decides to run away, and heads into the city. While the nun is frantic to find the boy, he makes his way to the coast, where a fisherman befriends the child. In Portuguese; English subtitles. 92 min.

The soundtrack is dominated by the happy voices of children getting ready to go trick or treating, when they will collect not only candy, but also pennies for UNICEF. Preserved by The Museum of Modern Art with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation’s Avant-Garde Masters Grant, funded by The Film Foundation. 16 min.
