  • I’d Receive the Worst News from Your Beautiful Lips

2011. Brazil. Directed by Beto Brant, Renato Ciasca. With Gustavo Machado, Camila Pitanga. Deep in the lush Brazilian Amazon, we are taken into the bedroom of Cauby, a photographer temporarily living in the countryside, and his lover, the alluring Livinia, as they make passionate love. This opening scene introduces us into the fiery, all-consuming world of the lovers, whose affair remains a secret from the townsfolk and especially Livinia’s husband, the town priest. Through flashbacks, Livinia’s past is revealed in vivid fragments—a cinematic reflection of her broken persona. Through exquisite camerawork, delicate pale-hued flashbacks, and beautifully unselfconscious acting, directors Brant and Ciasca offer a glance at eternal love and the struggle between the yearnings of the body and the necessities of the soul. Portuguese with English subtitles. 104 min.
