  • Mirrors of the Heart

1992. Directed by Lourdes Portillo. Portillo says, “I wanted to make a film about identity from my experience as a Mexican.” Shot in the highlands of Bolivia and on the island of Hispaniola, the film explores indigenous identities from the point of view of the descendants of the ancient Incas and Africans. Produced by WGBH for the 10-part series The Americas. In Spanish; English subtitles. 58 min.

  • Columbus on Trial

1993. Directed by Lourdes Portillo. Inspired by the controversy surrounding the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s “discovery” of America, Portillo creates a fanciful courtroom in which Columbus is cross-examined by the Latino comedy group Culture Clash and charged with atrocities against the native peoples of the New World. In Spanish; English subtitles. 18 min.
