1975. West Germany. Directed by Werner Schroeter. With Magdalena Montezuma, Candy Darling, Ingrid Caven. With the ascetic grandeur of Carl Th. Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, Schroeter evokes the visions of Saint Joan, partly through unused footage of Darling and Caven pantomiming in his 1972 film The Death of Maria Malibran. New 35mm restoration from EYE Film Institute Netherlands. No subtitles necessary. 25 min.

Winter Journey
1980. Switzerland. Directed by Werner Schroeter. Voice: Bulle Ogier. With Maria Schneider, Jim Auwae, Tilly Soffing, Margarethe Clementi, Schroeter. A return to Schroeter’s roots, White Journey was made with the sparest of means yet with the grandest of aspirations, charting the fatal passions of two sailors in the faraway harbors of Hamburg, Naples, Tunis, Hong Kong, and San Francisco. A true home movie—as refracted through Brecht, Genet, Cocteau, and Hollywood B-movies of the 1940s—it was shot in producer Eric Franck’s Zurich apartment in only seven nights (“Nights so as not to disturb the doctor’s surgery below,” Franck recalled). Unable to afford technicians, Schroeter did all of the camerawork, lighting, sound design, and editing himself, and inspired his actors to pantomime like silent-era screen divas while Bulle Ogier improvised their voices.
