The Life of Oharu
1952. Japan. Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. With Kinuyo Tanaka, Hisako Yamane, Yuriko Hamada. This spectacularly beautiful film enabled Mizoguchi to break through to Western audiences after a 30-year career. Oharu is probably the director’s most poignant expression of one of his essential themes: sympathy for the status of women. In Japanese; English subtitles. 136 min.
