The Right Stuff
1983. USA. Directed by Philip Kaufman. Screenplay by Kaufman, based on the book by Tom Wolfe. With Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris. Kaufman’s epic adaptation of Wolfe’s book focuses on aeronautical pioneers: Air Force pilot Chuck Yeager, who broke the sound barrier, and the astronauts of Project Mercury, the first manned spaceflight program. This simultaneously playful and sincere examination of the fame that accompanies heroism deftly combines thrilling special effects with the measured pace of an art film. 193 min.
