The Unbearable Lightness of Being
1988. USA. Directed by Philip Kaufman. Screenplay by Kaufman, Jean-Claude Carrière, based on the novel by Milan Kundera. With Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, Lena Olin. Kaufman’s visual and philosophical interpretation of Kundera’s novel is sensually photographed and superbly acted. In Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s, Tomas (Day-Lewis) struggles with his ambivalence about commitment and Communism, which both threaten to upend his personal and political realms. 171 min.
