The Scavengers
1969–70. Italy. Directed by Ermanno Olmi. With Antonio Lunari, Andreino Carli. After his release from a Russian prisoner-of-war camp, Gianni becomes a scavenger to survive. Old Du, a veteran who has survived two world wars and numerous hardships, teaches Gianni the fine art of scavenging, and the two soon combine forces to sell their goods in a nearby town. Olmi’s allegorical film is filled with well-observed detail and a large supporting cast of non-professional actors. 95 min.
