2011. Rwanda. Written and directed by Kivu Ruhorahoza. With Ruth Shanel Nirere, Ramadhan Shami Bizimana, Hervé Kimenyi. This radiant film-within-a-film, set in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, follows a determined film-maker’s futile attemps to fund his first feature, The Cycle of the Cockroach—a haunting drama about a brother and sister in the aftermath of genocide. Two extended segments of The Cycle play out on screen, capturing the horror and systematic madness of events whose fundamental characteristics are anything but unique to Rwanda. Grey Matter offers bracing insight into the nature of political violence. In Kinyarwanda, French; English subtitles. 100 min.

In the Film exhibition Global Lens, 2012
