  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes

2011. USA. Directed by Rupert Wyatt. Screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver. With James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis. Ostensibly a prequel to the 1968 sci-fi classic in which Earth is ruled by intelligent apes, this fast-paced, highly improbable piece of speculative fiction is enjoyable entirely on its own merits. Distinguished by its seamless integration of live action and sophisticated motion-capture techniques, RoPotA is a mesmerizing and even mordantly funny excursion into fantasy, featuring dazzling set pieces on the Golden Gate Bridge and among the towering California Redwoods. Wyatt's directs with élan; Franco, Pinto, and Lithgow provide a throwback 1950s sci-fi vibe; and Serkis, as Caesar the ape, gives a riveting, physical performance. The film delivers thrills right through the must-see end credits. Courtesy Twentieth Century Fox.
