Joyful Laughter
1960. Italy. Directed by Mario Monicelli. Based on stories by Alberto Moravia. With Totò, Anna Magnani, Ben Gazzara. An insecure, struggling actress (Magnani) with nothing better to do jumps at the opportunity to attend a New Year’s Eve party with a colleague. There she runs into an old acting acquaintance (Totò) and a professional pickpocket (Gazzara), and the trio soon embark on a night of wildly humorous adventures across Rome. Monicelli’s warmly funny social drama, is also an ode to the Eternal City itself. 106 min.
