    1951. Italy. Directed by Luchino Visconti. With Anna Magnani, Walter Chiari, Tina Apicella. This lovingly directed drama stars Magnani as a working-class woman determined to get her plain, untalented seven-year-old daughter into the movies. The film is a pitch-perfect, at times authentically cruel, send-up of the Italian movie industry, and features on of Magnani’s most colorful portrayals. 113 min.
