Without
2011. USA. Written and directed by Mark Jackson. One of the most startling and chilling movies of the year: A woman sets out into the woods. Quiet will do her good. A little calm. Or not. In Without, Joslyn Jensen physically embodies a mind, a soul, set adrift, but it’s Mark Jackson's imagining of the low-cloud Pacific Northwest that provides a setting for the slow disintegration of an obsessive young woman sent to care for a mute, catatonic man. Minimalist yet resplendent, shot with an inexpensive consumer camera, Without is what modern regional cinema can be: a cinema of pained eroticism and knowing fear. 88 min.
