  • Margin Call

2011. USA. Written and directed by J.C. Chandor. With Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Jeremy Irons. As the world discovered in 2008, the masters of the financial universe sit in anonymous offices in generic towers in lower Manhattan, staring at numbers that don't add up. Chandor's timely and terrifying dramatic exposé covers 24 hours on an investment-bank trading floor, as layer upon layer of human and professional malfeasance jeopardizes the entire fabric of the banking system—a system sustained and sequestered by corporate security guards, convoluted mathematic formulas, and, of course, greed. An all-star ensemble cast propels us through the ominous events of one day, toward a fiscal abyss—with just enough pathos to allow us to recognize these bankers' humanity.
