2011. Denmark/Sweden/France/Germany. Directed by Lars von Trier. With Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland. In this ethereal, psychological disaster film, Justine (Dunst) and Michael (Skarsgard) celebrate their marriage at a lavish party on the estate of her sister Claire (Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law John (Sutherland). With guests who hardly seem to know each other, the wedding is calamitous, absurd, and alienating to all involved—especially the bride. Just before entering her reception, Justine sees a strange flickering star, Antares, which is itself soon eclipsed by the rogue planet Melancholia, on a collision course with Earth. The soundtrack's frequent returns to Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde warns us of the self-destructive characters' fate in a film that is not so much about the end of the world as it is about our reliance on grace and the courage to face our mortality.
