  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

2011. France/Great Britain/Germany. Directed by Tomas Alfredson. Screenplay by Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan, based on the novel by John le Carré. In this slow-boil spy thriller, Gary Oldman dials back his usual style to give one of the best performances of his career as MI6 operative George Smiley, a career Cold War bureaucrat who discovers treachery within Britain's highly regarded spy shop. But who is the real traitor? Like le Carré's novel, the film doesn't give anything away until the very end—but it's well worth the wait. Alfredson, cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, and production designer Maria Djurkovic faithfully recreate soggy, smoky European locations, while Oldman and a stellar cast of British character actors, including Colin Firth and Mark Strong, cross and double-cross each other—all while maintaining their perfect British manners.
