  • The Silver Cliff

2011. Brazil. Directed by Karim Aïnouz. Screenplay by Aïnouz, Beatriz Brachner. With Alessandra Negrini, Thiago Martins, Gabi Pereira. A practiced chronicler of shifting emotional landscapes and humanity's ability to survive the ups and downs of contemporary relationships, Aïnouz knows abandonment and lost love from the inside out. The Silver Cliff—inspired by the song "Eye to Eye," by Brazil’s celebrated Chico Buarque—follows the heartbroken Violata (a mesmerizing Negrini) on cathartic nightly journeys through the streets of Rio, as she attempts to reclaim her sense of self after being abandoned by her husband. Winner of a well-deserved Best Director award at the 2011 Rio Film Festival, the film's gorgeous cinematography perfectly captures the light and textures of Rio de Janeiro.
