Orpheus
1949. France. Directed and written by Jean Cocteau. With Jean Marais, Maria Casares, Francois Perier, Juliette Greco. The most accomplished of films by the poet and artist Cocteau, who essentially dabbled in cinema as he did in other mediums. The film conveys a poeticized and dreamlike reality—a highly personal use of cinema, if not always easily accessible. In French; English subtitles. 94 min.
