  • Red River

1948. USA. Directed by Howard Hawks. With John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, Joanne Dru, John Ireland. Hawks’s sprawling cattle-drive spectacle is dominated by the performances of newcomer Clift and Wayne. John Ford, Wayne’s mentor for the preceding two decades, credited Hawks with finally showing him that “the son-of-a-bitch could act.” It is probably the best Western not directed by Ford. 133 min.
