  • Monsieur Verdoux

1947. USA. Written, directed, produced, and music by Charles Chaplin. With Chaplin, Martha Raye, Isobel Elsom, Marilyn Nash, Robert Lewis. Chaplin’s great political satire of capitalism and nuclear weapons cost him his immense popularity. Playing a Parisian Bluebeard, he oozes charm as he marries and kills lonely women for profit, but audiences on the brink of the Cold War didn’t get the joke, and Chaplin—not to mention America’s political left—began a multigenerational decline. 124 min.
