  • The City

1999. Egypt/France. Directed by Yousry Nasrallah. With Bassem Samra. Opening in a poor but vibrant quarter of Cairo, the film follows Ali as he pursues his dream of becoming an actor. Stuck under his father’s thumb and frustrated with life as a butcher’s assistant, he heads for Paris, where the only work he can get is boxing in rigged fights. Nasrallah uses a different style to depict life in each city—melodrama, complete with several musical numbers, for Cairo; neorealist grit for Paris—and the mix of genres makes for a film as amiable as its hero. In Arabic, French; English subtitles. 108 min.
