2008. Algeria/France. Directed by Tariq Teguia. With Abdelkader Affak, Ines Rose Djakou, Ahmed Benaissa. Malek, a taciturn, reclusive topographer, is surveying a remote area in western Algeria when strange incidents start to occur—explosions in the middle of night, mysterious blood stains, swarms of policemen prowling. When Malek finds a young African woman hiding in his trailer, he realizes that the region lies in a popular path for undocumented immigrants to Europe. With a straightforward plot, minimal dialogue, and stunning cinematography, Inland mirrors the paradoxes of political life in present-day Algeria. 138 min.
