Ouarzazate, the Movie
2001. Morocco/France. Written and directed by Ali Essafi. Essafi’s comic documentary is a portrait of Ouarzazate, a small southern Moroccan town whose economy has been entirely overrun by film crews drawn to its almost yearlong sunshine, stereotypical Middle Eastern landscapes, and exotic desert scenery. Turning his camera on crabby casting directors, would-be extras, and a charming veteran who once worked with Pier Paolo Pasolini, Essafi uncovers the strange reality of the transnational film industry and the disparity between movie magic and economic reality. 57 min.

Ramallah-based filmmaker Jadallah engages critically and satirically with the unspoken subtext of violence that shrouds representations of Palestine.
