The Eye of the Day
2001. The Netherlands. Directed by Leonard Retel Helmrich. The first installment in Helmrich’s trilogy follows Bakti and his Christian mother, Rumidjah, who live in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country. The film examines religious tensions within the family and in the larger nation, as well as the economic, social, and personal strife and struggles of the Sjamsuddin family. Helmrich’s film is brimming with vivacity, spirit, music, and struggle, all seen through a keen and understanding camera lens. 94 min.
