  • Duel in the Sun

1946. USA. Directed by King Vidor. With Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck, Lillian Gish, Lionel Barrymore. As lurid (“filthy,” according to one congressman) as Capra’s films were ostensibly wholesome, King Vidor’s Western epic remains beautiful and spectacular. With a little help from William Dieterle, Josef von Sternberg, Chester Franklin, and William Cameron Menzies, and lots of hindrance from producer David O. Selznick, Vidor’s over-the-top lyricism managed to triumph in glorious Technicolor. The great Lillian Gish’s death scene was her best since she died for Vidor a generation earlier in La Boheme. 130 min.
