Utamaro and His Five Women
1946. Japan. Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. With Minosuke Bando, Kotaro Bando, Kinuyo Tanaka, Hiroko Kawasaki. Though he had already directed over five dozen films, this was the great Japanese pictorialist’s first film made during the American occupation. This portrait of the notorious 18th-century printmaker Utamaro began a string of masterpieces over the course of Mizoguchi’s final decade. In Japanese; English subtitles. 95 min.
