  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream

1935. USA. Directed by Max Reinhardt, William Dieterle. Adapted by Charles Kenyon and Mary McCall Jr. from the play by William Shakespeare. With James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, Mickey Rooney, Joe E. Brown, Jean Muir, Ian Hunter, Kenneth Anger. A Viennese confection of an adaptation—rich and sweet, which isn’t surprising given that both directors were recent émigrés from “mitteleuropa” and Hitler. Glorious sets, superb photography, and an A-list Warner Bros. cast distinguish this delightful story about transformations, an enchanted forest, and busybody fairies. 137 min.
