  • Summer with Monika

1953. Sweden. Directed by Ingmar Bergman. Screenplay by Bergman and Per Anders Fogelström, based on the novel by Fogelström. With Harriet Andersson, Lars Ekborg, Dagmar Ebbesen, Ake Fridell. This shimmering story of lust in the Stockholm archipelago is perhaps the only Ingmar Bergman film that played in New York but was never reviewed by critics—probably because it was released here as a one-hour exploitation film with the title Monika, the Story of a Bad Girl. In a reversal of usual gender roles, Bergman’s nubile heroine neatly seduces her man and then abandons him. In Swedish; English subtitles. 96 min.
