Rome, Open City
1945. Italy. Directed by Roberto Rossellini. With Anna Magnani, Aldo Fabrizi, Marcello Pagliero, Harry Feist, Maria Michi. Rossellini had already directed a dozen films under the Fascist regime, but Open City was hailed as a masterpiece. Building on the 1930s work of Blasetti, Renoir, and Pagnol, and Visconti’s Ossessione, Rossellini managed to get most of the credit for the international success of Neo-Realism. In Italian; English subtitles. 100 min.
