  • Ivan the Terrible, Parts I and II

1944–46. USSR. Written and directed by Sergei Eisenstein. With Nikolai Cherkassov, M. Jarov, A. Boutchma, M. Kouznetzov. Eisenstein’s last film, unlike his others, is an almost operatic portrayal of Russian history. Part II was banned until after the death of Josef Stalin, who had found the director’s depiction of an earlier tyrant a little too close for comfort—even though Eisenstein had won the Stalin Prize for Part I. The director died of a massive heart attack while beginning work on Part III. In Russian; English subtitles. Approx. 180 min.
