1945. USA. Directed by Jean Renoir. With Zachary Scott, Betty Field, Beulah Bondi. The most successful of Renoir’s American films reunites him with nature and the water motif that was prominent throughout his career. The film seems poised between John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath and Elia Kazan’s Wild River, and shares many of their virtues. The film garnered Renoir an Oscar nomination. 91 min.
