Ninotchka
1939. USA. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Screenplay by Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, Walter Reisch. With Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire, Bela Lugosi, Sig Ruman, Felix Bressart, Alexander Granach. Garbo’s great romantic comedy under Lubitsch’s direction is a satirical look at the Soviet Union in the heyday of Joe Stalin. Perhaps the film is a bit too lighthearted in retrospect, but Garbo laughs, and you will, too. 110 min.
