  • The Killing Yard

2001. USA. Directed by Euzhan Palcy. Screenplay by Benita Garvin. With Alan Alda, Morris Chestnut. On September 9, 1971, in response to the death of an inmate at California's San Quentin prison, nearly half of the inmates at the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York rioted in solidarity. The prisoners took numerous hostages, and nearly 40 correctional officers, civilian workers, and prisoners were killed in the resulting siege. Palcy's fictional The Killing Yard revisits the Attica uprising four years hence, when an inmate is charged with the murder of two correctional officers. Retired and exhausted defense attorney Ernie Goodman—played with pitch perfect weariness by Alan Alda—reluctantly becomes the prisoner’s advocate. 110 min.
