  • Les Mariées de I’isle Bourbon, Part 1

2007. France. Directed by Euzhan Palcy. With Sara Martins, Jean-Yves Berteloot, Cécile Cassel, Bruno Slagmulder, William Nadylam, Marie Piot. This two-part historical romance, set in the 17th century, follows the adventures of three women, two prostitutes, and an orphan who are taken from France in the company of a protective priest and forced into loveless marriage and servitude on the French island of Bourbon (Réunion) in the Indian Ocean. Palcy addresses issues of female freedom and the politics of colonialism in a lush, wilderness environment beset by the impending threats of slavery and revolution. 90 min.
