1992. France/Martinique. Directed by Euzhan Palcy. Music by Kassav, Bruno Coulais. With Jocelyne Béroard, Lucinda Messager, Jean-Claude Duverger, Jacob Desvarieux. In this fantastical tale set in a West African village, a 10-year-old girl rescues the spirit of an aged music teacher, poet, and seducer on his deathbed. Through this act of love, she secures a guardian angel whose ghostly voice guides her and her father, a musically inclined mechanic, to Paris and back in search of a recording career. This joyous, song-filled celebration of French Caribbean music, dance, and culture features performances by members of the popular pan-African zouk band, Kassav. 106 min.
