  • The Butcher Boy

1997. Ireland. Directed by Neil Jordan. Screenplay by Jordan, Patrick McCabe, based on McCabe’s novel. With Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Eamonn Owens. Jordan uses powerful visual language to articulate McCabe's demented "bog-Gothic" tale of psychotic childhood (in a powerful and sympathetic performance from Owens) in a conservative Irish rural town. Set during the 1950s, against the backdrop of American popular culture and the Cold War, this caustic commentary on mid-century Ireland remains unmatched in ambition or blackly comic tone. 110 min.
