The Maltese Falcon
1941. USA. Written and directed by John Huston. Based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett. With Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Elisha Cook, Jr. Huston’s directorial debut was the third adaptation of Hammett’s novel, but it helped establish the private detective genre as a mainstay of the 1940s. Sam Spade became one of Bogart’s signature roles, and Astor and the supporting cast are terrific. 100 min.
