  • Young Mr. Lincoln

1939. USA. Directed by John Ford. Screenplay by Lamar Trotti. With Henry Fonda, Alice Brady, Marjorie Weaver. John Ford’s 22-year directorial apprenticeship ended with Stagecoach (1939), immediately followed by Young Mr. Lincoln. Building on his Will Rogers trilogy, Ford’s portrait of Lincoln is his first major step in creating his personal mythology of America and declaring the 19th century his own. Beautifully photographed by Bert Glennon (Stagecoach, Wagonmaster, Rio Grande), the film surpasses the 1930 Lincoln biopic by Ford’s mentor, D. W. Griffith. Henry Fonda, in the first of his six Ford films, is superb. 100 min.
