  • Samson and Delilah

2009. Australia. Directed by Warwick Thornton. With Rowan McNamara, Marissa Gibson. Set in the Aboriginal communities of Australia, what might have been an age-old love story explodes cliché and convention through unvarnished and unyielding authenticity. Director Warwick Thornton—who, like the principal cast, hails from an Aboriginal background—plunges us into red-dirt landscapes that serve in equal measure as oasis and prison. Samson and Delilah won the Caméra d’Or for Best Debut Feature at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, and was featured in MoMA’s 2010 New Directors/New Films series. An Indiepix release. Print courtesy of Australian Screen. 101 min.
