  • Mrs. Carey’s Concert

2001. Australia. Directed by Bob Connolly, Sophie Raymond. Connolly, one of Australia’s best-known documentarians, is celebrated for his films about the indigenous and mixed-race peoples of Papua New Guinea (including Black Harvest, which was featured in New Directors/New Films in 1996). His new film, made with singer-songwriter Sophie Raymond, is about an entirely different community: a girls’ high school. Every two years, Mrs. Carey, the school’s musical director, organizes a concert of classical music, performed by her students at the Sydney Opera House—but this time her plans may be thwarted by a headstrong star student. 92 min.
