  • Port of Shadows

1938. France. Directed by Marcel Carné. Screenplay by Jacques Prévert. Cinematography by Eugen Schüfftan. With Jean Gabin, Michele Morgan, Pierre Brasseur. This initial entry in Carné’s darkly poetic and atmospheric trilogy on the cusp of World War II was quickly followed by Hotel du Nord and Le Jour se lève. Gabin, already a veteran of over two dozen films, had established himself as the archetypal Frenchman, and this is one of his signature roles. In French; English subtitles. 91 min.
