The Blue Angel
1930. Germany. Directed by Josef von Sternberg. Screenplay by Carl Zuckmayer, based on the novel Professor Unrath, by Heinrich Mann. Music by Friedrich Hollander. With Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich, Kurt Guerron, Rosa Valetti, Hans Albers. Von Sternberg had been invited to Germany to direct Jannings in his talkie debut. The film was an enormous international success, and the director brought back a souvenir that he would fashion—over the course of six more films—into one of the cinema’s most iconic stars: Dietrich. In German; English subtitles. 109 min.
