The Adventures of Prince Achmed
1926. Germany. Directed by Lotte Reiniger. Screenplay by Reiniger, based on portions of One Thousand and One Nights. Silhouettes and animation by Reiniger. This “silhouette film,” believed to be cinema’s first animated feature film, was made using Reiniger’s delicate and expressive cut-outs. Reiniger made a quarter-million shots for the film, but less than half of these were used in the final cut. Tinted print, courtesy of Milestone Film & Video. Silent. 65 min.
