  • The Golem: How He Came into the World

    1920. Germany. Directed by Paul Wegener, Carl Boese. Screenplay by Wegener. With Wegener, Albert Steinrück, Lyda Salmonova, Ernst Deutsch. “The legend of the Golem, a creature made from clay by Rabbi Loew in 16th-century Prague to defend the Jews in the ghetto...was filmed many times. Paul Wegener cordirected and acted in a 1914 version and another in 1917. This is his most ambitious version, made with all the resources of the UFA studio.The enormous looming sets, by Hans Poelzig, were inspired by the medieval architecture of Prague.” (MoMA Circulating Film Catalog). Silent. Approx. 87 min.
