1976. USA. Produced and directed by Barbara Kopple. This passionate political exposé of the plight of mine workers in a small Kentucky town quickly became a touchstone for activist filmmaking. Over the course of a 13-month mine strike, Kopple presents the struggle of a rural community to survive in the face of a corporation’s determination to increase profits. As the director and her crew became a part of the community they were documenting, they ran afoul of company-sponsored thugs and unearthed the unsafe and unhealthy conditions in which miners and their families lived. 103 min.
