1938. France. Written and directed by Abel Gance. With Victor Francen, Line Noro, Marie-Lou, Jean Max. MoMA presented Gance’s 1919 anti-war masterpiece, J’Accuse, in the 2010 To Save and Project series. This, his sound remake, is (like Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion) a failed plea to prevent World War II. Although the plot differs from the original, the sentiments and the execution are mostly the same. In French; English subtitles. 124 min.
