  • La Marseillaise

1937. France. Directed and written by Jean Renoir. With Pierre Renoir, Louis Jouvet, Lise Delamare, Andrex, Nadia Sibirskaia. In Renoir’s take on the French Revolution and the overthrow of the monarchy, his brother Pierre plays a fairly sympathetic Louis XVI, and the director is at pains to show that even the aristocrats had their reasons. Begun as a Popular Front polemic, the final film reflects the director’s insatiable tolerance for all human foibles, which often left him at odds with the political left. In French; English subtitles. 132 min.
